Land management and land-use priorities and potential measures
The Strategy aims to support land management and land use throughout Kent and Medway so that it not only meets the economic and social needs of the county but also delivers nature recovery gains.

Land management and land use, when undertaken sensitively and in consideration of the habitat and wildlife that depends on it, poses a great opportunity to support the recovery of nature. The majority of these opportunities depend on landowners and managers delivering the Strategy’s habitat-based potential measures. In addition to these habitat-based measures, the Strategy promotes a number of overarching priorities and potential measures for land management and land use to be applied across the county.
Click on the priorities below to view the associated potential measures. You can download all the land management and land use priorities and measures in the document at the end of the page. Where a number appears missing, this is because it is associated with a wider measures. Wider measures are not a formal element of the Strategy and are therefore not included in the list below – however they are included in the downloadable measures documents.
- Priority LM1 – Increase in the number of farms employing nature-friendly farming practices, sensitive land management and delivering targeted action for nature recovery, resulting in farmland across the county that is rich in wildlife.
There are no potential measures for this priority, which is supported by wider measures and the implementation of nature-friendly land management and land use practices. Wider measures are applicable in the case of this priority, owing to the large extent of farms across the county where the measures could be applied, delivering wildlife benefits across our farmed landscapes.
- Priority LM2 – Farmland responding to climate change-induced pressures with the help of nature.
There are no potential measures for this priority, which is supported by wider measures and the implementation of nature-based solutions within land management and land use practices. Wider measures are applicable in the case of this priority, owing to the large extent of farms across the county where the measures could be applied, delivering nature-based solutions across our farmed landscapes.
- Priority LM3 – Prevent agricultural diffuse pollution of freshwater habitats and groundwater bodies in farmland, as a result of soil, nutrient or livestock management practices and physical modifications.
There are no potential measures for this priority, which is supported by wider measures and the implementation of water-sensitive land management and land use practices. Wider measures are applicable in the case of this priority, owing to the large extent of farms across the county where the measures could be applied, reducing diffuse pollution across the county.
- Priority LM4 – Publicly accessible open spaces managed to deliver benefits for wildlife, as well as the people that use them.
Potential measure LM4.1 Protection of habitats and species sensitive to disturbance by employing site management, and other measures, which support connection to, and experience of, wildlife but ensures our most sensitive sites remain undisturbed.
